Is Damming America Really OK to DO as Minister Wright did?

What is the difference between Rev. Wright's comments regarding America and those of Jerry Falwell?

  • Jerry Falwell has famously made all the following statements: “Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.” “God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve” “Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions” “AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals” http://en.thinkexist.com/quotes/jerry_falwell/2.html Now, before you all go off the deep end, listen. I don't agree with the comments made by either man. It is disheartening to say the least that Obama has called Jeremiah Wright his friend and mentor for 20 years. The only thing I want to know here is: why are the anti-American statements made by Falwell not met with the same outrage as those made by Wright?

  • Answer:

The difference is color. A white Christian can say pretty much anything. Some people view Wright as a American hating racist and possible Muslim. His church is practicing African Zionism which many don't understand, Yet most white Christians have no problem with Israel Zionism, same concept different country. It seems America has not advanced as much as people claim.

They are both ignorant bigots ... but that is not what concerns me. What concerns me is Obama's reaction... or rather lack there of.. as compared to how he reacted to Ferraro. He can't have it both ways... angry about racism when it's someone he doesn't care for and passive about it when it's someone close to him. Edit: I have no outrage toward either preacher... I just write both off as a waste of time (and anyone else like that). But to those that take offense.. both should be equally offensive.

Jerry Falwell was a bigot, nothing new about that. It are similar remarks to me , little difference. I've always rejected Jerry Falwell and now Pastor Wright as well. To answer your question. I think there are two major reasons why the anti-American statements made by Falwell are not met with the same outrage as those made by Wright. 1. The ridiculous absurd double standard of the American right. Does that really need an explanation? They impeached Clinton and left Bush in office, enough said. 2. Obama is selling his stuff to progressives, working very hard and successful in many cases to convince left wingers he's one of us. That's also the reason it's more important to me than the comments made by Falwell. Falwell was my political enemy plain and simple as were the politicians taking him serious. I know the American right is regressive so I was never shocked. I believe in international solidarity between leftists and I have come to regret many left Americans see Obama as their new hope. I hate to see good people be fooled and this pastor controversy only adds to that feeling

There is none. I was at the forefront of condemnation for Jerry Falwell. I also condemn what Rev Wright has said. Neither is good. I just don't buy everyone that goes to their churches are Kool-Aid drinking jerks.

Because the Bible can be interpreted to support what Falwell says- Remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah evidence of the destruction described in the Bible: http://www.bibleplus.org/discoveries/sodomfound.htm http://www.gotquestions.org/Sodom-and-Gomorrah.html Falwell's interpretation of the Bible supports what he speaks- No matter how we feel about what Jerry Falwell says- and he says plenty- the Bible supports him. Pastor Wright is going to have a hard time finding biblical verses to support his positions. ADD: Really neither need to be preaching the way they are. God hates the sin not the sinner.

It is apples and oranges.

I am not familiar will all Falwell's comments. I know he hated homosexuality. Some might argue he just hated homosexuals. He was zealous for how he intrepreted God's word. Jesus' greatest problem in His ministry was the people who were too religious for their own good. I think what he (Falwell) hated was sin. I am not a homosexual but let's say I was a thief. Falwell would hate my sin of stealing but I think he would not hate me as a fellow person. He might even try to bring me to God and help me overcome my sin. Wright hates me just because I am white. I don't think he cares if I a thief or not. It's enough for him to hate me because I'm white and further more, he uses his position to convince others to hate me because I'm white. Jesus was clear about two things: Love God and love one another. I think Falwell may have been closer to that than Wright. bg

While there is a double standard for many to be outraged by Wright's statements & think nothing is wrong with Falwell's statements, there are some signifficant differences. Even if you take the worse of what Falwell has said over many years & compared it to what Wright said in just that one sermon, Wright's statements are worse. I will look up details, but just the fact that Wright's sermon was centered around the phrase "God DAMN America" make his sermon much MUCH more anti-American. Here is another Wright quote. "The government lied about inventing HIV as a means of genocide against people of color."
