Did I break my chain of command?
-
I had a meeting with my director and she asked me to have a meeting with other NCO's. Planning the meeting had taken a while so I sent her an email saying that I haven't forgotten about the meeting and that I was going to email her minutes from the meeting. Monday morning she asked for the minutes and I emailed her replied back with it. The director then forwarded the email to my supervisor showing all the email traffic. My supervisor is upset and says that I have broken the chain of command. I think that she is upset because she wasn't added on to the email traffic. I don't feel that I have broken the chain of command since the original meeting involved the director and myself and never my supervisor. However, Even with that being said I made mention of this to my supervisor and even asked her if she could host the meeting but when she didn't I did it because it was after all my responsibility. And when I followed up with the director with the email I wanted to CC my supervisor but her military email account was full and she was not able to recieve any emails. Which I do have proof of. I guess she's upset because after her email was up I didn't email her about the minutes. I just really don't feel that I broke the chain of command when this was something that my director asked from me.

Answer:
Why don't you do this. Since your supervisor's supervisor is the Director, politely "tell" your supervisor to ask the Director if she feels you went outside the CoC. Definately sounds like your supervisor is just butt hurt!

NO you did NOT Break the Chain of Command... You were following Orders of Her/Your Superior... Can't help it if She is to lazy to keep up with her Email traffic... Another one that should have never been promoted... Sounds like she is a "Middle School Drama Queen"...

You broke a Golden, but complicated, Rule here. It's one that all of us have learned the hard way, but not a mistake you're likely to make again. Of course, you do as you're told and forward the minutes, that's not the issue here. Your supervisor is annoyed about being left out of the loop. It's an easy solution. Next time something like this happens, you tell your director, no problem, then immediately go to your supervisor and let him/her know what just happened. Ensure you CC your supervisor on any e-mail traffic. When you talk to your supervisor, he/she will let you know if there's any different course of action they want to see (ie QC the notes, etc). That way if your supervisor has an issue with anything happening, s/he can go to the Director directly. Using a personal and electronic approach covers you from both angles -- going to your supervisor with her mailerdemon rejection notifications will only make your situation worse. Get used to issues like this if you work in the intelligence or joint community, and learn to master it. It's as much about how you say things as how you do things. If you work it right it's not any extra work on your part, keeps you out of hot water, and makes you look like an all star.

Director? Supervisor? I am unfamiliar with those military ranks. Are you sure you are posting this in the right section.

Like the other person said, what is a director? Like a Div O?
