How long does it take to correct astigmatism?

Got disqualified for marines do to an astigmatism? can i still join?

  • Is there any chance i can still join, im 17 and have wanted to be a marine ever since i can remember. it took my about 2 months to finally get everything together to join because my dad (who i haven't seen or heard from in atleast 7 years) wouldn't sign the damn papers. Finally got that done everything else ready and i left for meps i scored a 70 on my asvab so i qualified for every job in the core. I went to meps did my hearing then my vision i fail my vision and have an astigmatism apparently, anyway they had me do the rest of my physical like my urine test blood sample and the retarded duck walk crap then said i was dq'd because of my astigmatism and couldn't join then i gave my liason my paper he just said get your recruiter to take you home so i dont really believe i have a shot in hell to join up but thought i'd make sure. My recruiter said i'll have to get an eye exam $105 out of my own pocket then get glasses another 100 out of my own pocket and i might have to get surgery about 500 out of my pocket. now remember i am only 17 i have phone and car insurance to pay i have no vision insurance my mom just got laid off and my stepdads job doesn't pay that great so i have been helping around the house so another question i have is does anyone know where i can get a cheaper eye refraction exam or possibly one for free?

  • Answer:

The following is disqualify. Refractive error (hyperopia (367.0), myopia (367.1), astigmatism (367.2)), in any spherical equivalent of worse than -8.00 or + 8.00 diopters; if ordinary spectacles cause discomfort by reason of ghost images or prismatic displacement; or if corrected by orthokeratology or keratorefractive surgery. However, for entrance into a military academy or ROTC programs, the following conditions are disqualifying: (1) Astigmatism, all types over 3 diopters. (2) Hyperopia over 8.00 diopters spherical equivalent. (3) Myopia over 6.75 diopters spherical equivalent. (4) Refractive error corrected by orthokeratology or keratorefractive surgery.

Ok, you need glasses. You should have noticed that already. Mom's tax refund will cover the exam & glasses. Cheap eye exam? America Best is about $60. Got friends? Got relatives? Hit them for the cash. Better to get them, than hit a tree you did not see.
