Government Jobs Questions?

Questions about intelligence jobs?

  • I am thinking of joining the coast guard reserve and training into intelligence. Few questions Are their civilian intelligence jobs or will I have to continue work with a government agency? Are intel jobs hard to get or come by? What is the likelihood I would need to relocate for my job? Also what is IT training like in the coast guard. I might be interested in that career field too.

  • Answer:

Yes, there are civilian intelligence jobs. Yes, most of them work for a government agency (plenty of civilians do, not all intel jobs are active duty military). On the USCG reserve side, you have to join for a specific job in a specific location near you. There has to be a reserve intel job open in your area for you to be allowed to enlist. A few years ago anyway, reserve Coast Guard intel jobs were relatively available. Not sure anymore, see a recruiter for that one. Full time civilian intel jobs are hard to come by, because civilian government jobs are hard to come by. Good pay, great benefits, great job security, tough economy. Pretty much impossible if you don't already have experience, although reserve could help with that. You do not relocate for a military reserve job. You drill in your area, and will be allowed to join if and only if there is a job available. For a civilian job, pretty likely you'd have to relocate. Again, they're pretty hard to come by, and you certainly improve your chances if you're willing to look nationally and consider moving to wherever the job is. Many people aren't willing to do that, and your chances of finding a job anywhere are certainly greater than your chances of finding a job within 30 miles of where you live now. Check out the gocoastguard website for descriptions of training for each rating specialty: http://www.gocoastguard.com/find-your-career/enlisted-opportunities/enlisted-ratings-descriptions Look for federal civilian intel jobs on USA Jobs: http://www.usajobs.gov/ See your local USCG recruiter for info on the Reserve. Good luck!
