Is it possible to take college classes while being Infantry in the Army?

When someone says the military doesnt allow active duty infantry to attend college classes.?

  • there isnt any truth to this statement is there? if someone is over in the middle east right now, and is infantry, could you answer this? if i want to be a army ranger, should i go to college first and then join the military, or could i join as an infantryman and take college classes while on duty?im almost 24, and im lacking any kind of successful college background.

  • Answer:

You can actually go to college while in the infantry field. I know many of my friends who have done it. The trick is that you wont be able to go "full time". Training takes presidence. But then again, it really depends on the C.O. Some will allow you to miss a field op here and there to attend classes. I was in the Corps, and while we were out at sea, on Navy ships, they actually had classes right there on ship. Some professors will allow to to continue your education online while on deployment. They make alot of effort on both sides (school and command) to ensure you get an education if thats what you choose to do. But like I said earlier, training and operations will always win out over going to class.

Bull! No, you can't go to college full time while in the military,. but you can take classes and get college credits which could lead to a degree. .Colleges, such as University of maryland have extensive operations either on line, or actual, on many miliary bases. Want to take courses while in th military?? No one is stopping you.

I am USMC infantry and was able to obtain 9 credits in a six month deployment to Iraq (online). It wasn't easy but it wasn't especially difficult.

It's not that you wouldn't be "allowed" to do it, it's that your duties will take precedence. A combat arms specialty in time of war isn't going to leave you many free hours in the day.

Bad info. They have colleges set up for active duty members. You have online classes, correspondance classes. When you are in the rear as infantry if you are not training you have a lot of down time. Most commands will let you leave to go to class. As for deployment, there are mail in classes where they give you all the material ahead of time and you just have to mail it in and they have online classes. Most infantry goes on patrols, but stay on the bases. The bases are all wired up. It is a command to command thing on how easy they will make it be for you, but you get a thing called tuition assistance while you are active duty. That pays 100% of the class cost. College classes actually help towards your promotions too. Military is a good way to get a free jump on your education. Yes, sometimes you might miss a semester, but I think it is worth it. Visit a base, go to the college office on base (they all have one), and ask them.

The needs of The Army, whatever branch, come first. But you can get a degree while on active duty. Most COs, and Senior NCOs encourage higher education. It makes the soldier and the service stronger. Have you considered ROTC, the Reserves, or the National Guard?

did u know, those troop in iraq (infantry) can actually study taking college course in there (distance learning) not the same as classroom, basically no actual teacher, just book and test, maybe some cd depend on course. And most of those course can be use for transfer.

You can attend College while on Active duty , so many Colleges are online now so you can take courses that way.. did anyone tell you about the Army Correspondence Courses? they also can earn you not only Promotion points for rank (E5-E6) But after maxing out and going to a College of your choice if they accept those Courses can add them break them up and you can earn your degree with that? In some MOS' the points are very high and it seems the only way to get promoted is with a College Degree. Good Luck to you Armywife & Soldier
