How was your experience in the Navy?

Navy reserves- how was your experience?

  • I'm thinking about joining the navy reserves to get a better chance at getting into the officer school when I graduate college in 2 years. I wanted to know if your experience was a Positive or negative one, if you did any additional advanced training or a school after bootcamp, when did you go to bootcamp, looking back now do you think YIU made the right choice?

  • Answer:

Why don't you try joing an NROTC program in stead? I think this will better your chances than joining the reserves. The reserves don't really do much aside from give you some extra spending money and health care, sure you get training but you only get to utilize it once a month and sometimes you won't even work in your job those weekends. Plus your enlisted training won't necessarily transfer over to your officer career. You should call an officer recruiter, you can find one at navy.com and ask them what the best path is for your goals.

Sarah has a good point, if you join NROTC, you are guaranteed a commission and guaranteed a designator BEFORE you get your commission. Besides the minimum enlistment is 4 years, you would have to request to change from Reserve enlisted to Active officer.
