Why did the Obama administration demand our marines disarm before the Panetta speech ?

    Normally the marines keep their weapons when the defense secretary comes to speak to them, but the afghan troops in the tent were not armed to begin with which is typical because they can't be trusted. The reason they disarmed the troops is because they didn't want to afghan troops to feel like 2nd class citizens. This decision was made by general Gurganus who said later that he wanted a consistent policy for everyone in the tent, so in other words he wanted "fairness". I personally have never heard of anything like this before, he should be thrown out on his ***. This is why our soldiers are snapping! This is why our soldiers are losing it! You have to ask yourself why hasn't major Nidal Hasan who killed 13 and wounded 30 troops has not been brought to trial yet? It gets crazier every day.

President Obama did not demand that the Marines disarm. That decision was made by the base commander. In case you don't realize it, tensions are running a little high over there right now. As a result, the commander thought it was a good idea to ask the Afghan soldiers that were in the audience to disarm as a way to minimize any potential threat. However, because asking only the Afghan soldiers to disarm would have looked bad to the media, the Marines were also asked to disarm. As a former Marine, it would have made me jittery to store my M-16 outside but I understand the reasoning behind it. If Panetta would have been killed in a revenge killing, think how badly that would have made the military look and how much ammunition (no pun intended) that would have given the insurgents.

Because there were 'Afgan' (also unarmed) troops that are augmented into each unit also in that room and with the recent rash of events it was deemed more prudent for there not to be any weapons available during his speech....and btw...it was done as a percaution NOT a demand. (Pump the brakes...and take a chill-pill...all is well).....
