How does someone become a Sapper?

Can someone become a US Army Sapper right out of bootcamp? How does one go about becoming a Sapper?

  • If this isn't possible, can you please list the steps in order to become a United States Army Sapper? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

A Sapper is a combat engineer. It is a MOS that requires AIT. A sapper, also called pioneer or combat engineer in many armies, is a combatant or soldier who performs a wide variety of military engineering duties, typically including, but not limited to, bridge-building, laying or clearing minefields, demolitions, field defences, general construction and building, as well as road and airfield construction and repair. They are also trained to serve as infantry personnel when needed in both defensive and offensive operations and are fully involved in modern counter-insurgency operations. A sapper's tasks have, throughout history, including modern day counter-insurgency operations, been devoted to the mission-critical tasks involving facilitating movement and logistics of allied forces and impeding those of enemies. The term "sapper" is used in the British Army, Polish Army, Commonwealth nations' military, as well as The United States Army and Marine Corps. Other than what Wayne said. No. You can not go to Sapper School straight out of BCT/AIT. It is a leadership school focusing on Combat Engineering skills. It is generally for SPC and above.

You have to be very good at collecting sap. Good luck, hope this helps. @ Wayne C: Great sense of humor dude, got a big grin from that. By the way, its "Do it Robbie, do it" and "Passionate lady, give up your vows". "I've always been a word man. Better than a bird man." Thanks to all military everywhere for putting yourselves in harm's way on my behalf, and for keeping this nation safe. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Remember that my answer is based on my last year of service in 2000, however I doubt the minimum has changed. At least NCO status, there is a waiver for Corporal. You have to talk with your Company Commander and then they, along with you will perfom some paper work and ensure you meet the physical fitness standards to attend, because no unit commander wants to loose a soldier for training if they are not going to return successful!
