What's the difference between a Grand National and a GNX?

So whats the difference between national guard and army reserves?

  • my original plan was to join the national guard but people are telling me that active duty and army reserves are better. whats the difference?

  • Answer:

The only real difference is that the NG has a state commitment as well as a federal one- so they can be called up during state emergencies. Otherwise they are pretty much the same. I recently retired after 21 years, 18 in the NG and 3 in the Army reserves. Form my experience, and this can be different from unit to unit, the NG was better funded because of state and federal money. the downside was that there seemed to be a little more politics involved when it came time for promotions etc.

National Guard was "originally" designed to be our Forces at home while Army Reserve was to call up "man-power" when needed. Oh, and National Guard gets paid by the State unless called up onto Active Duty.

The guy right above me is only partially right. The Guard goes overseas just as much as the Reserves does. The main differences are... Guard: paid by state Governor is in charge of scheduling deployments Reserve: paid by fed Fed. gov. is in charge of scheduling deployments Active Duty: it's a LIFESTYLE instead of a job you're paid by the Fed. Gov. Fed. Gov. is in charge of deployments You LIVE the Army full-time instead of going to drills on the weekends. Good luck! :)

the national guard is under the control of the governor.where as the army reserve in under the control of the federal government.which means if a war is started over seas, the army reserve will be sent if troops are needed.the national guard on the other hand is used when a emergency comes up in the state the governor will call on the national guard to keep things under control.

The national guard is normally used in a state for riot control, fight forest fires as well as any other emergency the Governor deems necessary for military help. The guard when it becomes part of the service is federalized and is no longer under the control of the state, This applies to the air guard also. Reserves are always part of the national system and are used by the U,S, government. a state Governor has no say about them at any time
