So what is so great about the SAS?

I've seen the SAS in action in Bosnia in the mid 90's and wouldn't like to mess with them. They are a uniquely dedicated group of men who are arguably the best trained soldiers in the world. When you make comparisons with other special forces you have to take into account the role of the particular SF you are comparing them with. Video games are created by computer geeks who have no military background and are basing the games on their concept of a soldier, so don't make comparisons unless you have seen real proof of the capabilities of a specific group of men. If someone voices an opinion on special forces and has never had any contact with them then they are just spouting off. Now, Being British doesn't make a Soldier, but, when you take into account the small size of the British Armed forces the selection process is a lot more stringent than most other armed forces. A British infantry private does 24 weeks basic training, the Royal Marine Basic training is 32 weeks. Compare this to 13 weeks which is done by the US Marines or the 10 weeks done by the US Army and you will obviously get a better product at the end of it. Well...SAS is faster than SCSI or SATA...and a lot faster than IDE...so I would go with the SAS drive. BTW, I chose to answer with puns from the computer world, because you have obviously spent too much time in front of one.

There is no Best Special Forces in the world. Each of the units mentioned has their own speciality and could be considered the best at what they do. The SAS are very good at counter insurgency, The Seals are very good at the amphibious role etc. The trouble with listening to people on YA, is you are getting opinion not fact.

The SAS have a pedigree. It is not enough to be the toughest of the tough. You have to be intelligent with it. I am sure there are exceptionally tough individuals within other forces, but it is cultivated, honed and refined much better in Britain. Talking generally, spetnaz are tough but thick, Americans are innovative, but not very good with discomfort.

Its because the training is the hardest in the world, and they are the role model of any other forces around the world. The mission that have been reviled are outstanding (e.g. 9 to 250 and SAS won, Bravo Two Zero etc...) Its also the pass rate, only 3% pass rate...

Someone has been playing Call of Duty. Pride for one's country is known as Patriotism or Nationalism. There's no logical reason why anyone feels that they're military is better than anothers. However, based of history, the most "badass" of any soldier is the Russian. During WWII, Stalin shouted in one of his speeches "NOT ONE STEP BACKWARDS!". Russians ran towards German troops in Stalingrad unarmed and simply prevailed due to overwhelming numbers. Also, if you hear a Russian talking, you can see little facial expression. They convey little emotion at all. THAT is the sign of a true warrior.

It stems from being ignorant of the military while at the same time thinking you're not ignorant of the military because of your armchair research. People often just confuse how they see these guys work in movies and in video games to how they actually operate. I'm not going to say all are equal, but they are basically saying "haha that guys only have three million dollars while the other guy has three million dollars and one cent!, he's so much more richer!"

people are ignorant i know. i personally find the german gsg 9 the best. the spetsnaz are also really good. i think maybe cause the english try to portray themselves so much higher then everyone and everyone seems to agree so as to sound smart
