Did the Troops get their absentee votes in? ?
-
Do the American Troops around the world know how important their votes are, to the election? Sometimes I think a lot of citizens do not take into consideration the votes of the Military overseas. I don't think any of the polls reflect what the military thinks concerning who they want for their President, and Commander In Chief. I think about you all everyday of my life, and would like to know if your votes have been sent? Also, when do the overseas Military votes get counted? Right away, with ours (citizens), or at the last moment, if you know? Thanks Mates!

Answer:
They know but some states are blocking their votes like my state , MA. The Dem secretary of state Bill Galvin is not sending them their absentee ballots and now the Feds are involved however it is likely it is too late for their vote to count now. My husband left this week for a deployment to Iraq but was able to early vote at City Hall for McCain before he left. The Military Times polls say that the majority of the Military is overwhelmingly supporting McCain.

They are counted at the same time as other absentee ballots. The number of absentee military ballots applied for that ultimately get counted is consistently low. In the last federal election, only about 30 percent of overseas military ballots were tallied, according to data from the federal Election Assistance Commission and the Pew Center on the States.

They normally come in as soon as early voting is authorized for the state they reside in. However, they are allowed to come after election day-it varies state by state. In 2000 in FL (I know I was there), the Democratic Party tried to get an injunction to prevent military absentee ballots from being counted. Surprisingly-it never got that much media coverage....(No I'm not a fan of either candidate)

Since the Military is a small percentage of eligible voters there is not enough emphasis put on their votes. Our Military is not respected by many as it should be and some states, when it is to their advantage, make it difficult for their votes to be counted in time.

When absentee votes get counted varies by state. California for example has the first round of absentee vote counting at 5pm on Nov 3rd. Others count them with the other ballots on the 4th. The counts continue as the ballots arrive.
