Entry level civil engineer in army corps of engineers process?

• So I noticed that a entry level civil engineer for the army corps doesn't pay nearly as much as a entry level civil engineer for a private company, so can someone please tell me the advantages of being a entry level engineer w/ the army corps as opposed to a private company, or perhaps how quickly a engineer can catch up in salary when they get hired. I heard working for the army corps is a great opportunity I just don't know anyone who can tell me why. By the way I am a civilian not a person in the military.

  It's called Job Security. As a civilian within the USACE, you would have benefits, could get some reimbursement for any extra schooling, and can advance, perhaps not as quickly as in private sector, but still advance. I used to work with the Corps and then made the stupid mistake to try for private sector. The first company I was hired into quickly fired the entire group once their contract (with the Corps, go figure) ended, and the second one went belly-up when their largest contract also downsized. Corps of Engineers does have several regions, and depending on your specialty (mechanical, chemical, etc), you can advance even farther than you could if you tried going private. For all essential purposes, private engineering and consulting firms are at the mercy of the economy and you would be no more than an independent consultant. At the very least, work with the corps would look great on your resume and perhaps once you obtain experience (hard to do for starting out in any field), it could only benefit you if you decide to go private.
