Looking for a house in Normandy France?

During the invasion of Normandy (WW2) - was there any paratroopers chutes that didn't open? Statistics?

  • I'm looking for verifiable statistics or 1st person accounts of any airborne paratroopers whose parachutes DID NOT open after exiting the aircraft during the (D-Day) Allied invasion of Normandy France on June 6, 1944. Site references appreciated. Statistical information a definite bonus. Proof/witness accounts receive highest consideration. Thanks. ~mishel

here is about the only relevant link i could find when i searched for "parachute failure" and d-day: http://fas-history.rutgers.edu/oralhistory/Interviews/quade_joseph.html in which this guy who was a paratrooper at d-day talks about one time he can remember chute failure during a training jump. this out of thousands and thousands of jumps witnessed. so if it did in fact happen on d-day, i'm sure it was some kind of freak accident. i get the impression that the paratroopers were very heavily laden with equipment - 70-90 lbs each, and many of them came down in swampy areas, where they drowned under the weight of their gear. this probably accounts for a far greater number of jump fatalities.

The deal is they all used static lines, which is an automatic way to open a chute as you jump out of the plane. Its almost fool proof. The only thing that could happen after that is that the risers (the lines connecting the guy to the chute) could have gotten crossed. That would have been real bad since they had so much gear. But just because your lines are crossed doesn't mean you are in that much trouble. You can fix that in the air and it won't be a problem. There had to have been a few, but I seriously doubt there were many.
