I've been thinking about this too. For me it's more about the fact that I disagree entirely with the war. So from there, how can you 'support your troops' without supporting the war? Well I think they do deserve a great deal of respect. What they do is very dangerous, and they are indeed fighting for their country. Even if the country is doing something terrible. Most soldiers have the right intentions, that is, fighting for their country, and helping the civilians of the countries we've invaded, and I believe intentions are the best thing to look at in this kind of question. Of course, there are plenty who have the wrong intentions, and they don't deserve to be called heroes. Where it gets more complicated is for example, the bombings of Baghdad. These were certain to result in far more civilian deaths than militant deaths, and someone had to pull the trigger. So can we say these soldiers are heroes, killing civilians because they're told to? We don't know what the intentions are here. But I think theres always a choice. And knowing the background of this war, I couldn't be the one to make that choice.

I think they are heroes, because in all the jobs in the country they had picked the job that is very dangerous, and they know they can even be killed, but they are heroes because they fight for our country and for your safety. Sure they kill other soldiers but only if they cause harm to our country.

every member of every branch deserves that respect whether they are airmen, soldiers, marines, or sailors.

Yeah well when you grow the balls to go over there you can call them whatever the hell you want.

Well this is a sensitive and contrivercial question. In my personal oppinion combat tested soldiers and anyone who volunteers for this dangerous job for the opportunity to serve the country and the people they love is and forever will be a hero without question. I am in the Army as an infantry and just because im one of them doesnt mean i think we are heros. usualy umong us the soldiers that stand out and do something coragious are heros. but individualy one may be a hero to a smale group such as family and friends none the less just as important. Nobody ever asks or claims to be a hero. and the definition of a hero is diferent from person to person. killing is one part of the job but becomming active in trying to change the world around you hasto be in some class of heroism.

What narrow view you have You see the hate here for America and Americans do you think that if given the opportunity they would not destroy this country? Most of the responders from over the pond, and up north are wishing an praying for just that and who stands in their way is it not our military?
Yes, they are. They risk their lives and because of that, we are able to live the way we do.
They risk their lives for the good of others. They risk their lives so that you can enjoy the life you live. They defend your freedom so that you don't have to. Yes, they are heroes.

They join the Military - not just the Army - knowing that they may in the course of their duty take another human life. The vast majority don't want it to happen but sometimes it's inevitable. They also know that in the course of their duty their lives may be at risk, yet they still join, on the whole because they have a sense of duty to their country. If this isn't a heroic act then what is? A Doctor's life is very rarely - if ever - in danger so why should he be hailed a hero? Policemen and women, yes, Firefighters, yes but a doctor? To me a Hero is someone who risks everything for the good of others.

I think they are heroes because they are putting themsleves in harms way and are scarificing huge chunks of their lives not for personal material gain, but so that others can have a better life, knowing that they may never return
