How old do you have to be to travel alone without parental permission?

If you are 16 years old can you travel alone without adult permission? Is it allowed here in Canada?

My parents got divorced so I don't have my passport because my mum have it and I need a new passport and my dad and I want to travel to many countries, but my mum doesn't want to sign my passport and a custody it is too expensive... and our solution is maybe travel without adult permission, but is it possible to do it?
Answer:

No it is not possible. Besides needing your passport to travel to any country, you will need a letter signed by any parent not travelling with you (i.e. your mom) giving permission for you to leave the country and specifics including how she can be contacted to double check the information. Other details should include where you are going, when your are going and coming back, who you are travelling with.
