What's the average cost of delivering a baby?

How can I reduce the cost of my hospital bill for delivering a baby?

  • I'm going to deliver (c-section) next week and the hospital says it's going to costs us a total of $4,534! We don't have the best plan for insurance, we have the plan below that where you pay 30% of cost. We made a big mistake by reducing our insurance plan obviously, but I was wondering, is there a way to make this bill go down?

  • Answer:

    1. Don't have a C section 2. Have a home birth 3. Go to a county hospital with proof of low income That's about it.

Well, you could deliver the baby naturally without a c-section; that will save you some money. You could also have your baby at home like millions of women in history have done without incident. You could also forego taking any pain medication, but the cost benefit will probably be outweighed by the pain. But honestly, you're just going to have to pay the ~$1350. I mean, is that really that bad of a cost for a safe delivery? It's not like you'd have to pay it all at once. Most hospitals are willing to set up payment plans, especially for new mothers.

Ask for a reduction in the price, you would be surprised at how many things are negotiable. You could get at least ten percent off without much effort.
