How many colleges should one apply to?

They have all African-American colleges? How is that legal? Can I go to one if Im white?

  • How is that legal to have a college that only admits you based on your skin pigment? not test scores or degree choice? I thought that was called discrimination and was illegal. So if I wanted to open a college that was for white students only or Asian american students only would that be allowed? NO im sure it would get burned to the ground by the NAACP. Its not fair. Whats the point of having black only schools? IS it because they think they would have a better chance getting in? Well that's not true, colleges go out of their way to make sure minorities are admitted into college even to the degree of rejecting a white student with higher scores in favor of a black student just to make sure there is diversity on campus. I don't think its fair. African americans cant have it both ways saying "we are discriminated against so we make our own schools so we have the right to discriminate against whites". If discrimination is wrong then why are they perpetuating it by continuing to run educational institutions that admit students not by merit but by race. As I said if I opened a college for all whites people would have a fit. And while were at it it looks like in the very near future say in 20 yrs or so white people will be the minority, then what? Will we be eligible for special minority only programs that exist today? No before everyone freaks out & starts flaming me- this is an honest question. Im not against black colleges for being for blacks Im against them for excluding other races which is what this country has been fighting to prevent since the 1960s now its just in the other direction. When whites are the minority will we have special schools for us? I think it shouldn't be at ALL. I think all organizations and schools should be open to every race not just one. and until that the case we are perpetuating racism. On all races.

    These colleges are not "for blacks only" clubs. They are historically black. As in the first colleges to arise for black people when America was still deeply segregated (Booker t. Washington ring any sort of bell?). A black at Harvard in the early-mid 19th century? Yeah right. As tradition and time passes, these colleges are naturally filled with a majority of blacks. They have no right to discriminate you if you are a different race, and I doubt that their goal is to foster an all-black supremacy race that will one day take over the whites and make them pay. Look, how many people do you know who aren't of African heritage whose top choice is a historically black college? Historically black colleges don't have a high rate of other races because other-minded students don't have a reason/historical attachment to enroll. It's culture and tradition, not racism. I mean, since when are all-womens colleges sexist?

Oh great, another ill-informed "reverse-racism" rant. Historically Black Colleges do not discriminate against applicants based on race. Most were created by blacks, during a time where most universities were "white-only"or "anti-black". Hence the word "H-I-S-T-O-R-I-C-A-L-L-Y". I'm from the UK and I know more about it than you. SMH. I bet you're the type of person who bitches about 'Black History Month' as well.

MPA is right up until he commented about all women colleges. The fact that it's still legal to discriminate based on sex just proves that we still have a long way to go to true equality in America. Segregating schools based on race gender or anything else is wrong, and hurtful to students.

Black people are more racist than whites. They're always using the race card on white people but when they say or do something racist, it's okay. They act like us whites owe them for slavery that our ancestors threw upon them. It's not our fault. Believe me, I'm not at all racist, I've just noticed this over time.

If you are White, you can attend any Black college. You may receive a scholarship because you attended a historical Black college. What is so wrong for African Americans to have their own schools? If it wasn't for racism and hatred from White Conservatives then equality would have exist and Blacks and Whites could attend school together with racial harmony. This type of question comes from ignorant White conservatives who hate true democracy and liberism.

As far as I know, they do not have policies against admitting white students. I know a girl who went to Prairie View A&M (a predominantly black college in Houston) and she was about as white as they come. Oddly enough, she said that because she was a minority there that she qualified for minority scholarships. I don't know how true that part is, but she had no trouble getting in.

Your assumption that there is some general law that prohibits all discrimination based on race is incorrect. Any school that accepts any federal money (including tuition payments that stem from federally guaranteed student loans) is prohibited from discriminating based on race. That is due to a specific law passed by congress. Congress has not passed a more general law prohibiting private discrimination in all circumstances. Hence, if you wanted to, you could start a school and limit admissions based on race. I am unaware of any colleges in the u.s. that are limited to a single race, but that does not mean that they do not exist. If they do exist, they do not get federal money.

They dont' have such colleges. You're completely and utterly wrong. You've basically constructed a fairy tale based on the phrase "traditionally black colleges," which were formerly segregated, just like all "traditional white colleges." None of them are segregated today, they're just underfunded and have marginal academics, so they attract few white students out of the immediate area.
