How big would self sufficient system be?

How can I stop an intruder in my home when I don't have an alarm system or know self-defense?

  • There's going to be some nights when I will be home alone in my mobile home with my child. I don't have an alarm system nor do I know self-defense. What can I do to protect myself say an intruder came in?

    You know, my first thought was a firearm as well as most of the answers, but you have a child in the house. Unless you are well trained on the weapon and can keep it safely away from the child, you might not want to go that direction. Keeping an intruder out is a better plan. I like the idea of outside lights. Get someone to install motion sensing flood lights around your mobile home. Look for blind spots that someone might approach and light them. Light the front and back doors (use fluorescent bulbs and you can leave them on all the time.) Make sure your doors have dead bolts in addition to door locks. The bolts make it much harder to get the door open. Get one of those air horns at a sporting goods store. If you hear someone prowling around, like they rattle the door knob, give three short blasts and dial 911. It should get some attention at night. ~

Shot gun. Simple as that. All you do is point in the direction of the intruder and BAM. Problem solved. If you're not into guns, try a German Sheppard. Great with kids and even better against intruders. If you're not a gun person or a dog person, then I suggest a husband.

Get a big dog. It doesn't have to be vicious, it just has to have an intimidating bark. They're safer to have around your child than a gun. And unlike a gun, no one can take your dog and turn it against you. My dog is a total candyass but you would never know it from her bark.

It sounds crazy, but an intruder even has rights to a point. Furthermore, if you hear an intruder enter your home, and you can exit the home, get out!!!! Do not wait for him to get to your room. If you awaken to an intruder going thru your jewelry box in the middle of the night, do not startle him and sit up in the bed, stay down and pretend to sleep (this will be very hard) don't move! He just wants what he can find, a burglar is usually not a murderer, but can be in the right scenario. If there are any large (good hiding) bushes tall enough to stand behind, cut them down. Although they can be attractive for a home, they are attractive to a potential suspect. Make your home as unattractive to an intruder as possible. A inside/housebroken dog would be a good idea, and will usually run off most intruders. You can rescue a wonderfully trained dog on Craigslist for your city in the PET section. Save a life and he will be prepared to save your life. Have your local handyman install very strong sensor lights for added security in the night. Have them aimed in all directions to include your vehicle. I wouldn't set them too strong, otherwise they will pick up any car going by, and your electric bill will skyrocket. Just make sure the intruder is not touching you when you touch him with this - it will knock the COO COO out of him. THIS EXTENDS OUT AND HAS A SOUND OF A TAZER -
