Can a parent even legally do this?
-
So lets say you are about 15-16 and you buy a computer or an Xbox or whatever with your own money, and you do something wrong. Regardless you aren't perfect in the situation and you need punishment, but if your parents decide to take away the Xbox for a really long time, can they do that? if you pay for it yourself, its yours. Thats kinda infringing your rights... Or is it basically your parents are above the Constitutuion when your are under their roof and nothing is "illegal" except abuse? Sorry for poor layout :/

Answer:
It's legal. It sucks, but you're a minor living under their roof.

Your parents are not "above the Constitution." They are not the government, so they are not bound by it. Yes, perfectly legal. A minor has no legal claim to property. All property, no matter how the minor acquires it, is the legal property of his or her parent(s), to do with as they see fit. The only exceptions are by court order (a trust fund or inheritance, for example) which exclude the parents from access (but also exclude the minor until s/he reaches the age of majority).

Yes, they can do that. If you are a minor, your parents effectively own all "your" stuff, and can remove it any time they please.
Your error is in thinking that it was bought with YOUR money. It is NOT your money, because by law, a minor has no property except that allowed them by their parents. Any money you think you have belongs to them, and anything bought with that money also belongs to them. Nor do you have rights, except (again) as allowed by your parents. That's what 'minor' means, your 'rights' are less than an adult's. You have rights under the Constitution, but they are held on your behalf by your parents.

In the US, minors don't own or control anything. It all belongs to the parents. This includes money that they might have earned or been given. The parents have TOTAL control as to how the money is spent. The only exception is when the minor has a trust fund or something like that. The parents can't spend that money, except for the minor's needs (like emergency medical stuff). So yes, your parents can take away your XBox. They can even sell or give it away, or destroy it. It's legal.

yes darling they can lol sorry you can't lock up your parents for theft. The lesson to be learned is follow the rules you keep your stuff. When you become a parent you will understand ;-) it''s not that bad..Be glad your parents don't charge you rent, electricity, food, and transport.

The Constitution gives us certain freedoms from the government. It says nothing about what your parents can do to you. ("The pursuit of happiness" is the Declaration of Independence, fyi.) Your parents are your guardians. They choose what you can do and where you live. Legally, you don't have your own money. They have money that they are holding on your behalf. The fact that they let you keep the cash in your piggy bank or a real bank does not change that. I'm not saying that they are being fair or being nice or that they're right. I'm just saying that they can take away your XBox, and the Constitution and the law will not stop them.

stop doing the wrong thing and you can keep your stuff. Anyway, yes. they legally can. you are a minor and "your" stuff is actually "their stuff" even if you paid for it. they control you and all your belongings.

They can do it, because you're basically their property until you're 18, so they could in reality, days before you're 18, take all of your stuff, and then kick you out on your 18th birthday

yes they can u live under there roof and your not 18 so they can do that and ground you till they see fit
