Copyright or patent help?
-
I drew up a version of Hello Kitty I thought Sanrio might be interested in. I want to present it to them without them being able to steal my idea. But how can I get this version copyrighted or patented if Sanrio already owns Hello Kitty.
-
Answer:
You cannot copyright something that you do not have rights to create. If you submit the drawing to Sanrio, they can literally take the drawing you created as their own since they own the copyright.

That would be a derivative work. The copyright would belong to both you and Sanrio. Realistically, the odds of getting a corporation to use unsolicited artwork are very low. You could submit a portfolio and try to get hired.

They will not steal your idea, but your work has no value EXCEPT to them, since they own the characters.
