How much does it cost to change your name in Michigan?

How much would cost to change my name?

  • I want to change my last name. How much does that usually cost? I live int he state of Michigan.

  • Answer:

In Minnesota its between $0-$180. Funny thing is my brother changed his name 6 months ago and he paid nothing. So there is obviously a way to get it free. Until I saw your question it never fazed me to ask him how he did it. You will need 2 witnesses to court with you. The judge will ask you questions to make sure this is what you want to do. Then the judge will ask you witnesses a few questions. Your witnesses should be family members or people that have known you for along time. Then the judge will make sure your not changing your name to run from bills. My brother changed hie name because he was a Jr. and his father (Sr.) had horrible credit. So every time my brother went to get credit they would deny him because or the confusion between Jr. and S.r. Also make sure after your name is legally changed you never use your old name!!! If you do it is illegal and you can get charged with impersonation, forgery, etc. Once you change your name you are no longer the name you were before!!

It appears to cost very little - just some state fees nothing big. Check out the rules at: http://www.namechangelaw.com/states/mi/michigan.htm
