Does the US post office charge for forwarding mail?

If put out advertisment in mail boxes...can the post office legally charge you postage if take them up?

  • if have had a call by the post office requesting someone to call so they can charge me postage on flyers that they have collected ....what should do and why? what can they do if ignore their voicemail and why? how about if there is a next time? what they can do and why

  • Answer:

Assuming you are referring to the US post office..... 18 USC § 1725 Whoever knowingly and willfully deposits any mailable matter such as statements of accounts, circulars, sale bills, or other like matter, on which no postage has been paid, in any letter box established, approved, or accepted by the Postal Service for the receipt or delivery of mail matter on any mail route with intent to avoid payment of lawful postage thereon, shall for each such offense be fined under this title. AMENDMENTS 1994 - Pub. L. 103-322 substituted "fined under this title" for "fined not more than $300". 1970 - Pub. L. 91-375 substituted "Postal Service" for "Postmaster General". EFFECTIVE DATE OF 1970 AMENDMENT Amendment by Pub. L. 91-375 effective within 1 year after Aug. 12, 1970, on date established therefor by Board of Governors of United States Postal Service and published by it in Federal Register, see section 15(a) of Pub. L. 91-375, set out as an Effective Date note preceding section 101 of Title 39, Postal Service. If you call them, you will get out cheap. If you don't and they press the issue, you could be fined up to 300.00 per offense. As for the 'why', it is because it is against federal law. Pretty simple.

USPS is supposed to try to collect the postage from each residence. If they don't pay, then then the items should be disposed of. The postmaster is fishing for an admission of guilt from you. Don't take the bait. Don't respond to the Postmaster or make any statement whatsoever. If you are confronted by a postal employee, your only response should be "NO STATEMENT". If this is the first time this has happened, then no further action should be taken against you. If you respond with any kind of statement that shows you are responsible, then they could try to prosecute you or keep a written record of you statement for future use. Don't do this anymore.
