I feel that it should be amended. I have four kids who are all on the honor roll. They constantly get state tests shoved down their throat like dibels and the FCAT. If your child is having a bad day this could affect whether they get held back for the entire year even if they are on the honor roll. I've also seen spanish speaking children get passed on even though they don't know english. I think it could use a lot of work and it's going to be hard to find something that fits everybody. Every child is different and learns in different ways the government needs to realize this.

The facts that I wanted to add to this debate were deleted when I was asked to enter my password again for some reason! Hmmmm. I'll accept that as a warning from big brother! I will say before any one makes another post, everyone should try to google the November 29th, 2006 edition of Education Week. In it there is an article called, "Proficiency for All is an Oxymoron." Consider it "must reading" if you want to give an informed opinion. They should also know that if the same NCLB standards were applied to Taiwan's students, who scored highest on an international math test administered in 1991, they would have scored at only 60 percent proficient and 22 percent would have scored below basic! In 2001, Sweden's students scored highest in reading on another international test and again when compared to NCLB standards, two-thirds of those students were NOT proficient. The bar is set intentionally high. A former secretary of education warned the NCLB standards drafters that the goals, "defy reality." I know that every day my students in third grade, whom I must teach the same curriculum that I received as a freshman at a "gifted" high school, are failing miserably. The fault is not with the teachers. (BTW: Under NCLB standards my college transcripts and teaching service background rate me as HIGHLY QUALIFIED!) The fault is not with the parents either. THE BAR IS TOO HIGH! PERIOD! Edit to answer questioner's addition: The freshman curriculum is that in science I had to teach structures of life. It involved studying the crayfish and beetles. We are not talking just observation here, but actually learning about the structure of these animals. The terminology was not broken down to the third grade level. Assessement involved answering questions on respiration, reproduction, and overall structure. The depth of knowledge required was at the evaluation and synthesis level on Bloom's taxonomy. Now I'm teaching the Physics of Sound. Again, no reduction in vocabulary terms. In math the students must work with line plots, arrays, solid and plane geometry. Again, the concepts are not on third grade level. The writing is demanding too. Not much time for grammar instruction. Instead we are focusing on persuasive essays, reflective and narrative pieces. The narrative piece is supposed to be on a life changing event that the writer was to reflect on! What does a seven or eight year old have to REFLECT on? The criteria is that the students must follow the entire writing process and incorporate the prewriting in their final drafts. Evidence of editing using proofmarks is also needed in the portfolio and I am NOT allowed to tell the students what to do on revisions, only point out that a revision is needed. The poor babies are just lost. I follow a core curriculum that is supposedly based on "world class" instruction. What world? Pluto. It is too much TOO soon. I didn't see much of this until I was a freshman in high school and I had to test into that school!

Nope. Two Words -- Bush Veto. I love the act because it embarrasses the public schools that are failing. I think that does a lot of good. I would not change a thing. I don't think the Federal Government should have much to say about local schools but one of the few things they should do is testing. This Act is exposing the truth causing parents to storm into Boards of Education meetings and are giving those jerks the tongue-lashing of their lives. I live in a town which has one the worst school systems in the state. I love this law. Now maybe they will start teaching our kids English as a FIRST LANGUAGE instead of a second one.

what exactly is the no child left behind act ? i know what its suppose to mean it is suppose to mean iof a child is not at grade level they will be kept back untill they learn what they are to learn for that grade etc , well thats a bunch of bs , there are alot of kids gettigbasiclly kicked out of hgigh school there senior year because there credits from previous years were not there ie they pass them from grade to grade till they r suppose to be in there senoior year and because of there age toss them out because they dont have enough credits . when its not jus tthe child fault that they didnt learn or get the credits , some teachers dont explain it to where all the kids in class understand it , or the parents dont show concern either , alot of teachers not all come to school because its there job to teach and they dont care of the child learns it or not they gonna get paid anyway . i think the no child left behind act should be more inforced and also provide more school for the older students to go to , i think it should be amended and revised on how there going to implement it , yes school offer tutors etc , but some times the kids need more one on one time and teachers also nee d more time to go over the cariculume with the kids and things should not be changed med stream . my son in grade schoo his teacher has certain books and things they have to teach the children in a 6 week time frame not allowing the teacher to go over it again for those that did not understand it etc AS FOR THE SPECIAL NEED CHILDREN WHAT EVER IT MAY BE I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE MORE TIME TO LEARN IT ETC , BUT I DO FEEL THAT SOME OF THE SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN NO MATTER HOW MUCH EDUCATION THEY MAY GET THERES A GOOD CHANCE WHEN THEY GET OLDER THAT KNOWONE WILL HIRE THEM WHICH TO ME IS VERY SAD CAUSE SPECIAL NEEDS PEPOLE CAN DO A GOOD JOB AS WELLL AS ANY OTHER IF GIVEN THE CHANCE YES IT MAY TAKE LONGER OR SOMETHING BUT STILL THEY DESERVE TO MAKE A FEW BUCKS JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE
