Is it legal to ride an office chair around the street and use it as a substitute for a wheelchair?
-
You know the office chairs, those comfortable chairs with wheels on the bottom that roll? Well, I don't have a wheelchair, but I do have an office chair, and I was wondering if I could ride down the street in it, and use it as a substitute for a wheelchair. Even ride it around it stores, and supermarkets, like a wheelchair. I could drag my feet to make it move. And when I get on the bus, the bus driver would stop, and strap me up in the wheelchair space. Could I do this even though I can walk and it's an office chair? Would I be able to ride this office chair around, as if it were a wheelchair? Would this be legal?

Although I don't think there is a law against using it on the sideqalks and such, there is a law against using it in the streets. The bus driver may not take you seriously. Or s/he may have rules as to what type of equipment can go on the wheelchair lift. I don't think its very safe to roll around outside in a office chair, those wheels weren't meant to take sidewalks and lots of travel.

I doubt its ILlegal, but wheelchairs are made so that you can get around with your hands or without moving much at all. office chairs, you have to move your feet, you have less control, and you can't easily go uphill like onto a bus ramp. I'd just go with a standard wheelchair.

Sure, it's legal. Stupid, but legal.

No. The bus company does not have to allow it because you are able bodied and it is not a wheelchair. Is there something wrong? Do you need a wheelchair? There are agencies that will help you get one. If there is nothing wrong with your body then you should be ashamed of yourself for being so lazy. You are insulting everyone who is in a wheelchair. And as someone who has been in one, I am insulted when an able bodied person does not appreciate there wellness. So rude and insulting this becomes when done by an able bodied person.

ride it all you want. You are not entitled to disability services, such as a legally disabled person. You are probably too dense to understand what a insult your question is, to persons who are actually disabled.
