Should driving while using a cell phone be illegal?

Has been illegal in the UK for the last year or so after similar studies. I have to admit that it is difficult to talk with a passenger and concentrate on the driving; lord knows how much more difficult it is to concentrate on a telephone call and driving. If it saves even one life, isn't it worth it? What price a telephone call?

In my experience, it is not handling a cell phone that distracts from driving, it is trying to think about the conversation that distracts. Some people can handle this type of distraction better than others. If statistics show that enough accidents can be attributed to using cell phones, then they should be prohibited while driving, or states should require a special test and authorization shown on the license.

It is also illegal in New jersey [to use a handheld cell phone] -- I think sooner or later it will be illegal. The cell phone was a great invention for EMERGENCY use but, like everything else good in life, people take advantage of it and abuse it's use.

Yes it should be illegal. The first time I get rear-ended by someone talking on their cell-phone I will probably end up in jail for making them eat their phone.

i think it should be illegal bcuz it is very dangerous. but i think that driving with a bluetooth is just as bad because its not about having free hands, it's about thinking about the convo and not the driving.

They just made it illegal in California. I agree with this law. So many people get distracted by the simplest things. I know I get distracted and mess up doing regular things sometimes when I'm on the phone, so it would be easy to mess up driving while on the phone. Besides, scientific studies have shown that nobody can truly multitask ... meaning it would be challenging for the average person to drive and talk on the phone at the same time. Unless it is an absolute emergency, I don't think people should talk on the phone in the car.

I totally agree with Kyian. However, even if some people can handle it better than others, America is equal. The govt. wont make a law that applies to only some cell phone users. It just wouldn't be fair. I think it is safer that it is illegal for anyone to use a cell phone while driving. No one can drive 100 percent safely 100 percent of the time. There is always going to be a time where someone who is experienced in a field of employment makes a mistake. Its life.
