What is the legal drinking age in France?

What is the actual drinking age in France at the moment?

• After visiting france for many a-year (every year of my life, in fact), I'm still confused on the legal age for drinking, and by that I mean the legal purchase and consumption of alcohol. The information on the internet seems to be conflicting. Also, if the rules regard buying spirits at a higher age limit, what percentage of alcohol is a spirit. The weird thing is that they don't have signs up in shops or anything, I guess they don't have probems with uderage drinking like we do.

  i was there last summer visiting my summer...and in broken french and english, i'm pretty sure she said the legal drinking age is 18. she said it's the same as the age you can get your drivers license--18. she also told me that there are different bars for different age groups (maybe just where she lives...idk?) and legally only the 18 and over bars are supposed to serve alcohol, but the bars for those under 18 do sell alcohol too since they are more interested in business. i don't think the legality of alcohol consumption is strictly enforced at all.
