When will employers in the UK realise that they are shooting themselves in the foot?
-
I am currently unemployed and looking for work. To help myself I am doing voluntary work for two days each week. However when applying for work all I get is have you got experience. I do have work experience but not in the area that I am applying for work in. Other opprtunities I cannot apply for because other employers want degrees (despite the fact I am applying to a firm to work not to study a Masters Degree). I know it is the same for other people. My point is that employers by these stupid demands are actually shooting themselves in the foot. They are missing out on people because of their demands and then complain that they cannot find workers, they refuse to train people wanting crazy amounts of experience or they expect people to be university educated (When they do not need that). What planet are they on? It's definitely not earth. This isn't because of the recession it has been going on for quite a few years. It's doesn't go down well with anyone. Employers should train people for a career and not expect people to have done three years at university. As I said above you apply to employers to work not to study for a Masters Degree.

How is it shooting yourself in the foot to want people with experience or qualifications? It is far more time-consuming and expensive to train someone to the required standard than to simply find someone who already has what they need. With the job market like it is (i.e. hundreds of people applying for each job) employers can afford to be picky. Businesses exist to make money, not to waste it training people without any skills or experience. Instead of whinging, why not get experience in the field you are applying for - or apply for jobs in the field you have experience in? It's not the employers fault you do not have the qualities they are looking for.

Employers are NOT hurting for employees. In fact, they have far more candidates than they can use. That being the case, why take someone with no relevant experience when they have candidates who DO have such experience. I do agree somewhat with the overriding desire for a degree these days, but only a bit, because it too is understandable. A degree shows that a person has taken the initiative and done the work needed to get a degree. In most cases, it's not even a relevant degree that is needed, they just want to see that you took the time and made the effort to earn a degree. As an employer, if I see 2 candidates of the same age, and one has a degree, I start to wonder about the work ethic of the other person. In short, employers are not 'shooting themselves in the foot', they are looking for anything they can find to differentiate between the candidates before them.
