What is selling these days?

Last week I asked why the selling of beef is banned on full moon days in Sri Lanka?

  • I got one answer from a person called zachi which i dont agree with. The Buddha never said to force people not to eat meat. There are not only buddhists who live in sri lanka. They might be the majority...but there are also christians, muslims and hindus living here. Most buddhists in Sri Lanka are hipocrites. Most of them eat chicken and fish ....but not beef! Can anyone tell me one country with a majority of buddhists which bans the selling of beef on full moon days? No one should have the right to impose their religeous or cultural beliefs on others just because they happen to be a majority in a country! They also ban the selling of alcohol on full moon days? Film halls are closed and only religeous programmes are aired on national TV.The Buddhists in Sri Lanka are no better than some of those muslim extremists out there who want some day to make the whole world follow Islam!I would like your comments! Thanks!

  • Answer:

Why u have such a fuss? if u want to eat beef or anything u want and also alcohol why dont u buy it before and keep it in the refrigerator and use on Poya day? And l agree Buddha didnt say anything abt eating meat but its not the main reason for this ban. Its a cultural reason not only coz Buddhisum as l think.

First of all I would like to tell you that there's nothing wrong in what Buddhists in Sri Lanka are doing. On full moon days, Buddhists are vegetarians. This is something the Buddhists have made up, not the Buddha. And by the way, beef or any other food is not banned for non-Buddhists!!!! and would YOU drink alcohol on a religious day??? If the majority is Buddhist, they have the right to impose their beliefs atleast on ONE day of the year. You can't compare Buddhists to Muslims, because in Arab countries, they have much more strict rules that are applied EACH day of the year. I would like to say the last sentence you mentioned is totally wrong because Buddhism, UNLIKE ANY OTHER RELIGION, is a free religion and Lord Buddha never FORCED anyone to follow his path and Buddhists follow their beliefs out of respect for the Buddha which is why you can't compare Buddhists to Muslim extremists.

I don't know the answer to your question but did you know their are cities in the US that can't sell alcohol on Sundays, Christmas or Easter. No one should have the right to impose their religious or cultural beliefs on others? Yeah right.

I remember when businesses were always closed on Sundays, because the Christian majority called it a Day of Rest. I can't stand Christmas, but I have to put up with it for about two months a year or more, thanks to all the loud, colourful advertising. Mind you, Christmas is no longer a very religious event, but its origins are Christian. In mixed societies, we have to put up with what the majority wants. C'est la vie. that means That's Life! I don't worry too much about it. It is more important to to focus on what I myself do, not what other people do. I can't change them, I can only change me. What else could you do with all the energy you have used to get mad at THEM? maybe move to another country? (just kidding, I'm sure you love your country and that's one reason you're having strong feelings)...

There must be a cultural or traditional reason for this ban. However, the ban isn't all that bad, is it? Are you not permitted to purchase alcohol and beef during all other days? How often does the full moon appear? Every three, three and a half weeks, yes? Is that really a hinderance, or is it a minor inconvenience? Does not Buddha teach patience and not to expend energy over something so trivial? I agree with your view toward extremists- it is never the religion which is at fault; it is always its faulty practitioners.
