your job takes you to a public health office in a small texas community bordering mexico. an indigent family comes by to get advice about their ill infant. the child was admitted to the hospital one month after birth bc of sever dehydration. the hospital staff concluded that the dehydration may have been due to periodic episodes of diarrhea and vomitting. they treated the child until she appeared normal and sent her home with the parents. the child has grown slowly from its original 7.2 pound birth weight. now, she is beginning to lose weight again at 6 months old. you notice that the child has a faint blue tinge to her skin and seems very inactive and lethargic for a baby. the parents explain that the child has a low body temperature, does not feed well, and still has mild bouts of vomitting and diarrhea. it is the job of the public health office to determine whether the child needs more assistance for her apparent illness. the office must first figure out what type of physician or medical care is needed. 1. what have you learned so far that may help you solve the case study investigation? does information about heirarchy or levels of organization help you understand the condition? is there a role of the environment that might determine the cause of this illness? 2. so what information about the physiological environment is useful for resolving the csi? could the infant's condition have something to do with water or ions? how could further knowledge about enzymes help understand the disease? does the information on molecular transport provide any more clues for solving the case? if so, what information does it provide? how does the information help explain the infant's condition? 3. what information about cell structure helps you to better understand the condition of the infant in the csi? is it possible that a particular organelle is responsible for some of the characterisitics of the illness? 4. could there be a link to a problem with the way aerobic respiration is carried out in the child? what role could genetics and cell reproduction play? 5. have you come closer to solving the csi? what other info. have you gathered after reading the organization of body tissues? what other info. about tissues and organ system function is needed to solve the csi case study? 6. what did you conclude about the infant's condition? which level of bosy organization was creating the pathology? what type of pathology did it appear to be? could the dehydration and vomitting be due to cell transport problems? was the blue coloration and inactivity be the result of metabolic errors? is it one illness or several?
