in ny there are three criteria that must be met for slander. (to paraphrase) 1 you know the information is false. 2 you tell that false information to someone else and someone believes it. 3 you do this with malice so the information hurts that person in some way. defamation of character and slander are sligfhtly different legal concepts. it would probably best to look at your local lawyers in the yellowpages and interview them. there is very little cyber law out there. but a lawyer specializing in slander suits would probably help you if you had a case. it is more important that the lawyer you choose has an expertiese in real law and not worry about chat rooms. also you must decide if it is slander (verbal defamation) or libel (written defamation) if someone types it on the screen are they "telling" others or "writing" to them? i view reading a computer screen as reading a book page. so if it was typed then it is libel. not slander. i am not a lawyer. good luck.
