Where to get a job under 16?

Where can i get a job at the age of 16?

  • In a few weeks i'll be finishing school, so ill have over 3 months off until i start college, and i really don't want to be lazying around for all that time, so ive decided to get a part time job. But what sort of business will take on an inexperienced teenager? I have been thinking about sportsworld or river island, but Im not sure if they take on 16 year olds. So please can you give me advise on where i can get a part time job for a 16 year old? sorry about the rambling!

  • Answer:

Depends if you've got experience or not. Tbh, I'm 19 and I can't even get a job right because of lack of work experience. Plus, a lot of employers may be reluctant in taking 16 years old on, so you might be better off getting some work experience such as voluntary work to pad your CV out a bit. I know how much of a pain it is, because I'm in the same boat! Though again, it depends on the area on where you live and how many jobs are going. Wishing you luck though!

You can try shops, but they may want someone with more experience (or who is older if the shop sells alcohol etc.), or someone who will be around more long-term. Your best bet is jobs where you need no skills, you won't be handling anything age-restricted, and people come and go all the time, so they won't mind if it's just for a few months. So shelf-stacking at a supermarket, washing-up in a pub or restaurant, cleaning up in a builder's yard, stuff like that.

Try some volunteer work. You can put it on an application, and it is experience. It looks pretty good too. :) You can try Papa John's. I work there, it's great in the store I work at. But, they don't seem too big on hiring under 18, because of the limit on things you can do. McDonald's, but honestly, it's not a good place. Wal-Mart, but again, not so great. Try locally owned restaurants and stores, or franchises.

We don't know where you live, which is a major factor. You will have plenty of competition from university students on vacation. You need to work out where you might pick up some specifically summer work not calling for any particular skills, including work which you could do to cover staff holidays. Some department stores recruit specially for the summer sales and keep staff on afterwards for a while. Here are some links.
