What is hiring policies?

Question on NYPD hiring policies, and my criminal history.?

  • I have currently maybe 6-7 outstanding debts. I also have 2 convictions for misdemeanor Disorderly Conduct. I would like to know if these would prevent me from being hired, both the Dis Con's and the Credit. Also, would it be best to immediately settle the credit card bills? Thanks! BTW - I take the test in June and hiring begins in July, so I need to make decisions quickly.

  • Answer:

Either may prevent you from being hired. The standards state reasons for disqualification include: "Conviction of an offense which indicates lack of good moral character or disposition towards violence or disorder, or which is punishable by one or more years imprisonment. Repeated convictions of an offense which indicate disrespect for the law." Your two disorderly charges will be a definite negative. Your credit is not an automatic exemption but will be considered as part of your overall evaluation. I doubt that hiring from the June test begins in July--there is often a delay (sometimes significant) between the test date and the hiring. Check to see which exams they will be hiring from this July. To get a better assessment of your particular situation you can call a recruiter at: 212-RECRUIT (732-7848) or 800-550-3836.
