I need your help about my research on Nigeria!?
-
I am Tugberk Tanrisevdir. I am the head delegate of our school's MUN club, Antalya College Intl. Relations Club and we will be attending MUNTR 2012, the largest-participated international Model United Nations conference of Turkey, and I will be representing Nigeria in the committee, African Union. I would like to broaden my acknowledge about Nigeria and also Africa. Here are my questions: *In "A Report of the CSIS Africa Program", which is really informative and helpful. As the professor mentioned in this report, yes it is obvious that Nigeria's economic resources are based on petroleum industry. It is for sure that Nigeria might be extremely affected by the ups and downs of prices on the world markets. The problem is how Nigeria can get over this situation? Are there any possible economic resources that could keep Nigeria on its' feet? *What are the risks to stability in Nigeria? How can Nigerian Government combat against these risks? *Furthermore, Nigerian Government is not taking steps against groups such as NDPVF or Boko Haram? Isn't it a risk to stability in Nigeria? Does also the government admit their inappropriate manner? *Does the government violate human rights while it is fighting with the groups such as NDPVF or MOSOP? (I hope that I use "NDPVF" and "MOSOP" right, what I mean is groups that want the freedom of the region "Delta") *From your point of view, how will Arab Spring affect Nigeria? *As you know, one of the main reasons of Arab Spring was the use of excessive force by security forces. Nigeria has the same problem too. Does the government admit this too? *Unfortunately, there is a religious conflict between Christians and Muslims. How could we stop this? What would you do, if you were the president of Nigeria? Would you use education, security forces or what? *What do you mean by saying "poor governance" ? *To my mind, Nigeria is governed really bad: e.g. Corruption, arbitrory arrests, child abuse and also restrictions on freedom of assembly, movement, press, speech and religion. But in the conference, I must act like the head of the state. Therefore, how can I defend my country?

Answer:
You have an interesting question that would have been comprehensively tackled in our forum if only you followed the guideline. What I can say about Nigeria is that we require the obvious fix. Most Nigerians are really tired of the situation in this country and the enemies of our states are not helping matters.

Nigeria has huge coal deposits and they are looking to exploit those resources. Nigeria has a lot of infighting, religious and tribal/ethnic groups. Not sure how those tribes/ethnic groups can bridge some common ground to stand on as it has been going on for quite some time. Most Nigerians I've met in the USA are Christian rather than Muslim.
