Is it a long process to change your first name?

How do I change my legal name in California?

  • I have two first names, a middle name and a last name. This is confusing since different accounts I have with banks, insurance, school and blah blah, think my 2nd first name is my middle name, while others actually have it right. What I want to do is just legally drop one of my first names, so it is simply just a first, middle and last name...I am 18, where can I as an adult get the forms and information to legally change my name? For free...if possible. And is it a difficult task? Long Process? Please tell me everything you know, thanks in advance.

    Go to superior court around your area and tell them you need to change your name. You'll have a lot of paperwork...but considering your situation, dropping one of your first names would be more convenient. Good luck to everything.

Just go to your local city and county building and fill out the necessary paperwork. Its not a very straining process.

Go to the court house make an appointment. You go in tell them way you want to change your name and it will happen people do it all the time it's not hard you will have to pay a fee for it. Then you go to the Social Security place with your papers to prove that you changed your name and get your SSN card.

California used to have 2 different methods. One was called the "usage method" where you went to all your "legal institutions" and simply changed your name like if you were getting married. Simply by "using" this new name it became LEGAL in a short time. The 2nd method was through the court system which a judge approved. Go to your local public library and look up "California Name Changes." This is how I changed mine.
