What will people do when the movement of tectonic plates makes a mockery of our current national boundaries?
-
What will people do when the movement of tectonic plates pushes one or more countries under the earth's crust to be melted by the magma? What little flag will people wave when their country has been turned into molten magma? Hypothetical I know! I almost wish that the tectonic plates could move a little faster just to make a mockery of our silly little territories! How do national boundaries take into account the movement of the tectonic plates? What will the continents look like in 100 million years time??? Of course, the human race will be extinct by then?!?!?

Answer:
I thought the same thing whilst visiting Þingvellir in Iceland where the North American and European Tectonic Plates are splitting a country which will end up being two separate Islands on two different continents. It really shows that it is nature in control and not humans.

Humanity will probably not exist in 100 million years time, but then again, dinosaurs ruled the Earth for about 200 million years, and they weren't a intelligent race. So, humanity has some hope. Humanity is a infant compared the longevity of our existence. We are only about 200,000 years old with 6,000 years of historic data. If humans live 100 million years, there is no way to imagine what humans will evolve into so far from now. In terms of national boundaries, if humanity still exists, hopefully, we will be not so arrogant in petty differences and intolerance.

Firstly, they'll never be a real factor because of their speed. It's a good question though. Secondly, the strict definition of international boundaries (in international law) take into account any changes. For example, when an international boundary is defined as where a river flows, a change in the river's flow does indeed cause a change in the international boarder. Similarly, other boarders are defined by latitudinal lines, as is a large portion of the boarder between the U.S. and Canada. Iceland is growing by centimeters each year, since the North American portion is separating from the European portion. Also, a handful of island nations will probably disappear because of the rise in the ocean level. It won't be an issue.

Your perfectly serious question was undermined by the use of the word Magma which sounds like smegma and vulva and labia. Nice woody question though.

Oh my gosh! I am not worried what it will be like in 100 million years. The earth will have been burnt up by then.

Hey B.O.B. it maybe as little hard for you to grasp but some of us live in the present!

I'm tempted to recite "Imagine" but it's been done too many times. I mean about the "no country, nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too" part. Okay, let's see, a bunch of question here. As you point out, tectonic plate movement is too slow, our silly little wars change boundaries faster than any plates could. The boundaries move with the plates. Lose a little of the continent to the south, gain a little in the north. Even-Steven. In 100 million years, Pinnacles National Monument near Soledad, California, will be up by San Francisco, about 100 miles further north. San Francisco will be under water. Hawaii will have a new island. Yes, of course the human race will be extinct by then. Or have evolved into something else. Still, the sun will be pretty much the same, a bit warmer maybe, which is good news for folks, if any, up in Canada and points north.

Sure it will happen science have said it so but in a million years .Are we watching to much of The living planet .Human probably want survive for that long our Solar system will have collapse with in it self or crash into another super solar system by then .

This is only happening at 3cm a year, so it will take millions of years for any landmass to arise. Learn your Geography mate And the islands of Hawaii are growing all the time because of tectonic processes, so America is growing all the time
Mr. Hello
Making a mockery of boundaries is something only people from yucky countries think about;)
