American Health Care System - Help?

I know. It seems so stupid does it not? You are spot on. That is why many americans are fighting for healthcare reform. I think the rest of the world is looking at us like, how can they have such military power and be so stupid when it comes to common sense things like health care.... Technology does not equal morality. That is my answer. Is it spot on? Your assistant

The insurance question in America is interesting because many here don't understand the question or the possible answers. This goes back to a money issue. It is true that anyone in an emergency can get immediate care and help whether at a private or public hospital. Every emergency room MUST take every case that comes in and many do without any problems. Some hospitals transfer patients with ill-will though. If a patient cannot then pay for the services rendered then the hospital will place a judgement on their property and when the property sells the hospital will get paid. Otherwise the individual will declare bankruptcy and get the debt wiped away (see the money component?). Health insurance would help those individuals who have a catastrophe and need long-term care. If you do not have the insurance then family must step in and care for the member if it is possible. The issue is that there are too many loopholes and possibilities for abuse. Doctor offices submitting bills for patients for tests not done, treatment not given. There is a problem but a universal payor system would not solve the problem yet.

May I suggest that you look at Michael Moore's film "Sicko". This gives a very striking comparison of health-care and treatment in the USA on one hand and those found in Canada, Britain, France and Cuba on the other. The American system comes out of this as a disgrace to a civilised nation. Your's is a good question. Why do Americans not only put up with this but thousands take to the streets to protest against any hint of improvement? The film is available on Google Videos (American page).

Americans have access to all of that stuff. It's access to stuff like long term cancer treatment, and stuff like that that Americans are lacking. People aren't routinely turned away at the emergency room. That doesn't happen here.

Perhaps this will help you figure out. You mentioned cancer, let's take a look at the difference in results there between the current US system and what the UK has. The overall cancer survival rate in the US today for men is 66%, the survival rate in the UK is 45%. The overall cancer survival rate in the US today for women is 63%, the survival rate in the UK is 53%. So tell me, given the choice.. would you rather have a 66% chance of survival or a 45% chance? When you answer that, you'll understand where we're coming from..
