How much validity needs to be on my UK passport to get back into the UK?
-
I am a UK citizen living in Australia. My passport is due to run out in April 2011. I have just found out that I may need to return to Scotland for a family matter in November, HOWEVER, I cannot apply for a new passport yet as I need to use my present one as I am going to Thailand in October. If I apply for a new passport they take the old one off me, and if I apply for a new passport when I get back from Thailand at the end of October it wont be ready in time to get me back to the UK as it takes up to 6 weeks for the new one to be made. I have been on the passport website (UK passports in Australia get made in New Zealand) and they said that you CANNOT fast track a UK passport while you are out of the country, I would only be able to do that while I was back home in the UK! So I need some help! Does anyone know what website, or embassy etc. I should go through to provide me with help with this matter? Has a UK citizen travelled back home into the UK with a passport that has less that 6 months validity and go to go in to the country. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks

Answer:
Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months when you enter Thailand. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=GB&AR=AU&DE=TH&VT=AU&EM=AU&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 .. For getting back to Australia your passport must be valid on arrival. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=GB&AR=AU&DE=AU&VT=TH&EM=TH&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 .. For travelling to the United Kingdom your passport may be even expired (no time limit). http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_website_client.cgi?SpecData=1&VISA=&HEALTH=&page=both&NA=GB&AR=AU&DE=GB&VT=AU&EM=AU&PASSTYPES=PASS&user=SKYWEB&subuser=SKYWEB1 .. However that will only apply if you have your luggage checked through to London and also have been ticketed through. Should you be required to pass any Asian immigration authorities you better check in advance whether they require you to have six months passport validity. http://www.skyteam.com/about/travelhelp/travelinfo.html .. http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/asia-oceania/australia?ta=entryRequirements&pg=4 ..

Your own country will take you back with 1 day left on the passport! As a matter of fact if you don't mind waiting while they check out your status you can go "home" 6 months after your passport expires (as long as you can get there!)
Docar
I guess you are coming HOME.
