Can you get a temporary driver's license in California?

Can my Korean girlfriend get a California drivers license? She has a Korean license and J1/F1 visa...?

  • She moved here recently with me and would like to buy a car. Her Korean license isn't expired. I plan to contact the DMV about it, but can she simply take the written test and have them issue her a californian license? Thanks

I am confused by your question, because as I understand it a J1 visa is a student visa, which does not allow permanent residency, while an F1 visa is for children of US citizens who can be permanent residents. The answer to your question depends upon whether or not your girlfriend is a California resident (i.e., can remain in the US permanently, and intends to remain in California permanently). I'll answer for both. If she is NOT a resident, she cannot get and does not need a California license. She can drive lawfully with her Korean license so long as it is valid. An international drivers license is neither necessary nor sufficient--all it does is translate her actual license. It can be handy, but it does not permit driving by itself, and it is not required. If she IS a resident, then she can and must get a California driver's license.

I don't think so unless she has an international driver license. Your best bet is talk to the DMV.
