People to People Student Ambassador Programs?

  • I need a bit of information about the People to People Student Ambassador Programs. I got a mail from that program directly to our house. They got the last name right- but not the first name so we don't really know who it is for (I have a sister too.) But we didn't sign up for anything like this. Its intro is something like this ______ is invited to travel and study in Japan in the summer of 2010.... Join junior high school students from Los Angeles County area who are eligible for the program.... Is this something that EVERYONE gets? Even if they didn't sign up for anything? I tried google...not much of a help how they knew our family.

It's a really good program and is pretty legit. It tends to be pretty pricey but it's reasonable. Somebody else on here said that it's roughly double what you would spend going on your own but that doesn't seem to account for a lot of the stuff you get to actually do when you get there. I was invited multiple times year after year and went on a few of them. One of them as an athletic version of the program and the others standard. It was really good fun and you meet a lot of really cool people. You're nominated by somebody to the program. Usually you're not supposed to know who it is but I was personally nominated by teachers at my school and once I entered junior high I was nominated by the mayor. It's a really good experience and looks really really good on college applications. To be honest if you're probably only going to go once, I suggest you do it later on in high school, you'll get more out of it and the chaperones tend to be more lenient with what you're allowed to do and hence less uptight about everything. If you can afford to go though, do it.

A teacher at my son's school nominated certain students. We recently received the Japan letter. Same with a program at John Hopkins. They likely got your name from your school. I know kids who have done the student ambassador program and had a good time and felt it was educational and worthwhile. The price for the trips are reasonable for what they are, but they do cost quite a bit of money. The cost depends on where the trip is to. You can do fundraisers to help raise money for the trip. Local newspapers may be willing to run a story about you trying to participate in the program, to help raise money. I've seen articles in local papers. Good luck!

Its a commercial travel business ..albeit a very expensive ... Their sales gimmick is this belief that you are especially invited the prices are about double what you could do it yourself for they trawl all records for names and addresses I just get special invites from Publishers Clearing House

My granddaughter was the only one from Hawaii representing young people from the United States to the Gothia Cup International Soccer Games in Sweden. Some of the U.S. teams practiced in Denmark and Finland; however, her team practiced in Reykjavik, Iceland, before competing in the games in Gutenberg, Sweden. She had the pleasure and opportunity to meet with students from all over the world, exchange ideas and developed ongoing friendships. She worked hard to acquire sponsors for this challenge. She wrote letters to non-profit organizations, corporations, business leaders, educators, politicians, sports media, radio/TV people, family, relatives, friends, anyone and everyone, about the program and about herself. She raised more than enough money for her trip expenses and was able to buy gifts from Hawaii to share with other foreign country team members.

I recieved one of those for a trip to Europe, but the trip cost is about $5,999 and you have to raise it yourself. You also have to pay a fee to attend a meeting, which they give you the information there. In the introduction letter, they should have a PIN# and a website. Visit the website and find out whom it's for that way. I would recommend avoiding the trip though.

If you've ever sent away for anything or subscribed to anything, you may have ended up on a list that was bought by P2P. Some people are nominated by their school or a friend, but most are only invited because their name came up on a list somewhere. The program is very expensive for what you get and you could travel to the same place with both parents and stay longer for around the same amount.
