A Thai living in the United States who wants to change her name ?

  • I was born in Thailand, but I live in the States now waiting for my green card. I have a very long Thai name and it has been very troublesome to use in this English speaking society. Whether it is when the teacher calls the roll, when I open a credit card account, or even when I have to verify my medical prescription. No one can pronounce my name correctly, and some choose not to address me by my name at all. Coupled with the fact that I plan to settle here in the States permanently, I really want to change my name. Does any of you know the legal process for a Thai citizen living in the United States with a pending green card to have a name change? Can it be done at the Thai embassy? I'm hoping it should be possible because I'm not planning to go back to Thailand.

    You will need to contact the Thai embassy for information on the process. However since you have already applied for a Green Card, I would advise waiting until that process is completed, otherwise you may find that it may get unduly complicated with you suddenly having a new name.

If your name was changed due to marrige, you can ask to change it with the DS-5504, as long as you have a US passport. You might not be able to do it after one year of passport issuing. I'm not sure what to do if you have not gotten your US passport yet, so you should first check with the Thai consulate or embassy. Thay should be able to change your name by Thai law before recieving US citizenship. Then, your changed name would be easy to settle in the US.
