How does the mobility scheme work?

Youth Mobility Scheme Visa?

  • I am a Citizen of Canada who likes to come to UK to live with my boyfriend until he finishes his master degree. (He is non-British and holding student visa). I was wondering if I applied for Youth Mobility Scheme visa, what would be happen to my visa if I get married there? Am I still eligible to work there? Or should I apply for another visa?

  • Answer:

The YMS visa is a two year, once only, non extendable or renewable visa that allows young people from participating countries to live and work or study in the UK without having to apply for a work or student visa. You cannot switch into any points based system visa from inside the UK on this visa, so cannot change into a work visa. If you marry your non EEA boyfriend, it will make no difference to your immigration status or the conditions of your YMS visa as neither a YMS nor a student visa carries any residency rights towards settlement. If you wanted to switch into a student dependent route after marriage, you cannot do this from inside the UK, but would have to return home and apply from there.
