How can I become a citizen of Costa Rica?

Can I get permanent residency in Costa Rica if I have a felony in the USA?

  • OK here's the deal. I have an opportunity to buy property in Costa Rica. I want to stay down there forever, and ideally be able to work and vote like a normal citizen. If I can't get citizenship, I would like legal permanent residence. Money is not an issue, but this is: When I was 18, I was young and stupid and hanging with the wrong crowd. We broke into an electronics store, and that's a felony I have on my record. I am 27 now, Been to college, grad school, and have become very successful. However, I cannot vote here in the US. I am a completely different person now than 9 years ago. However, I'm afraid this felony will become an issue I'm sure when a background check is done on me in Costa Rica applying for citizenship/residency. What are my options there? Am I eligible for residency?

  • Answer:

A criminal record is not a prohibition to transfer to Costa Rica.
