What is the procedure for renewing my passport and how long does it typically take (Indian passport)?

  • I am an Asian Indian with an Indian passport living in Indiana, and would like to renew my passport at the Indian Embassy in Chicago. I'm not able to make a whole lot of sense out of their website and was hoping someone who has been through this before could help me. My passport expires in May, 2009 but I just very recently changed from student F1 visa to H1B work visa. My work visa starts in Jan, 2009. I know I need to renew the passport, but am clueless as to what it involves. How long will it take for me to get it renewed...i dont want to send it in the mail and then not have it back by the time I start work in january because i need to show my employers the work visa stapled in my passport when reporting to work in january. Please help! :(
