What work visa should I apply for?

What Visa do I need to apply for part time work in the USA?

  • What type of visa would I need to do temp part time work in the USA this summer, bar work, general office work? Please don't give me a lecture that foreigners shouldn't be stealing our jobs and all that red neck bul*** that I got when I posted this on the USA YA. I have 7 staff who work at my college in the UK and surprise ALL american!! So back to the question, what visa would I be able to apply for part time work while I'm studying there for 2 months. Thank you for the help oh, I do report to YA time wasters;)

  • Answer:

Since you said you'll be studying here in the USA, you should look into the F-1 student visa. There are work restrictions with this visa. You can not work off-campus for the first year, so you would need to find on-campus employment. I'm sure the campus counselors could/can help you find on-campus employment in an office or as a teacher's assistant or something along those lines. I have provided a link with more info. Hope this helps & good luck with your studies and travels.

In the US, only employers can apply for employment visas for their employees. US does not have "working holiday visas" which a few countries like Australia have. Bar work, etc, does not qualify for an employment visa. There are short-term visas for resort workers, for example, ski instructors at ski resorts in winter, summer resort staff. These jobs do NOT pay enough to cover your rent as rents are very high in resort areas. Again, employer must apply for their employees. And you are w-a-y too late for summer 2011. Apply in January or February of 2012 for summer 2012, and if any employer wants you, they will file for your visa. BTW, NO part-time work! Full-time only. Always. Foreign students on F1 foreign student visas are strictly prohibited from working. The sole exception is, if you are awarded work-study as part of a financial aid package, you may work on campus for up to 20 hours per week to the maximum amount approved in your financial aid package. The school will record approvals, and itemize all forms of financial aid with the stipulated amounts on your I-20 form. Without this, no working for foreign students. Work-study is a type of financial aid, NOT a job!
