How to join French Foreign Legion?

How to get VISA to join the French Foreign Legion if I fail grad school?

  • I'm a man from a 3rd world country, reasonably fit, in Graduate School now in the United States. I'm on scholarship, expected to do well and get a green card here, but the competition is extremely tough, and I'm not sure I'll pass. The French Foreign Legion is one of the things that I'm considering in case of failure. It's not easy, but it's better than my life back home. The biggest problem I have is whether they will give me VISA to go to France to join. Will they give me a VISA to visit France while going back to my home country? If not, will they give me a VISA if I told them that I want to join the Legion? The Legion will not verify to the authorities that I am a potential employee.

  • Answer:

I believe the normal practice is for you to apply for a tourist visa, then show up at a legion recruiting office. The legion will not assist you in getting a visa in any way. In most nations, using a tourist visa to then seek any employment is forbidden, but there is no problem (and this is unique) in having a visa for tourism and using it to join the Legion. But actually, any visa that will allow you to stay in the country for a few days is sufficient. The competition is tough in the legion too, less than one in ten who volunteer will qualify to become a legionnaire.
