Can I get a British passport?

My father was born in scotland, but does not have a british passport. Can he get one and can I then get one?

  • my father was born in scotland but moved to ireland soon after he was born. He never applied for a British passport. My question is, can he apply now for one, he is 58yrs old.? Also if he can apply for one, can I, his son, apply for a British passport too? I was born in Ireland. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.

I am presuming you are in the USA British Embassy Passport Office 19 Observatory CR NW Washington DC 2008-3611 Tel:- 1202-462-1340 OR 1-202-588-6500 http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en www.britainusa.com Best thing is for you to get it straight from the horses mouth and contact the above. I am British, I do believe your dad would be able to get a passport with a proof of his birth, if his birth was registered in Scotland. And so you being the son should be able to claim citizenship through your dad, but I am not entirely sure of all the ins and outs of it. Northern Ireland is part of Gt.Britain, I don't know what your circumstances are, being born in a country doesn't necessarily make you a citizen of that country, think of military families. It is who your parents are. Anyhow good luck with it, I think things are hopeful, but it could take a long time, and paper work, especially if your dad has no birth certificate. And if that is the case he can contact the following. http://ukinusa.fco.gov.uk/en/faqs/findingofficial-british/certificates

What nationality were your grandparents. If British most likely yes for your father. If not most likely no for you both. Being born somewhere usually does not confer citizenship. Usually citizenship is obtained by right of blood (notable exceptions are the three north american countries). In other words you inherit it. If your father is a British citizen then you can become a British citizen by descent. (meaning that you can not pass citizenship on to your children automatically).
