What degree do I need to work in a German american embassy?

  • I am fascinated by the German language and German culture so I was curious about following this route. I am curious what type of degree(s) I would need to pursue this career choice. I am interested more in translating as well and am wondering what the actual position is called, lol. Although I am open to other positions as I am aware regular translator's do not get paid well. ( not to worried about it since it's my passion however :D ) I would like to be heavily specialized in these fields to be able to compete with whatever type of demand there is. So what do I need? German degree? Business degree? even a History degree? Lay it on me! Any other specialized skills would be great. Thanks in advance!

    A degree in Political Science with your thesis on some subject in international politics would be the best bet. Being fluent in German or some other language as well would be an advantage. However you wouldn't usually be able to ask for a specific assignment in Germany. Diplomatic staff are sent where they are needed, so you might be posted in Asia or Latin America instead if you worked for the State Department.

i´d advise you if you can to first try to study MORE german in germany.and see if you like living there.also because what we think we know about a foreign language ,once we go to the country where they actually speak it...we get surprised how little we know the language! this is the government´s school for that purpose http://www.vhs.de/
