Dealing with Korean consulate in regards to an FBI background check?

  • Dealing with Korean consulate in regards to an FBI background check? Hello everyone, I've recently been going through the long tedious process of getting my documents ready in hoping to take a job teaching in korea. Talking to a recruiter today he asked me if i had ever been convicted of a crime. I told him I hadn't, but that I was arrested some years ago for being underage with alcohol in my car. The arresting officer also thought i was high so i was charged with DUI alcohol/drugs. cooperating i took a blood test and came up clean for both alcohol and drugs. My charges were dropped and this shows on the FBI background check. The recruiter however says he doesn't think the consulate will sponsor me for a visa because they don't like any arrests related to alcohol or drugs. Now this was 8 years ago, and since then i haven't been arrested, i have a college degree, a TEFL certification, and steady work history. Does anyone have experience with this situation? and if they do reject me does anyone know if i can appeal to the consulate? I live in chicago and it's not very far away. I was wondering if i could possibly show up or write them a letter explain the past situation? answers appreciated. Thanks

  • Answer:

The recruiter's question was have you ever been convicted of a crime, which you have not. He didn't ask if you'd ever been arrested; you apparently volunteered that information. Also, I was not aware that the Korean (or any other nation's consulate) could ask the FBI to do a background check on a US citizen. When you submit your application, just make sure you've answered all the questions on it accurately and truthfully. If you are specifically asked if you've ever been arrested, then you've got to explain those 8-year-old events. But if all they want to know is if you've ever been convicted, you can simply say no, you have not (and nothing else).

It shouldn't show up. In any case you can often submit additional information about any conviction by writing a letter which you submit along with your CRC where you can outline what the circumstances were and the outcome.
