How to get German citizenship?

How long does it take to get German dual citizenship?

  • I'm looking to obtain dual citizenship for US/Germany. I meet the requirements, my father is a natural born citizen of Germany, and my mother is a natural born citizen of the US. I'm going to be traveling abroad very soon and I'm going to try and get dual citizenship before I leave. How long should this take, and also, are there any German speaking tests that I would have to complete?

  • Answer:

According to the German nationality law, If you were born outside Germany and one of your parents is a German national, you are allowed to maintain both nationalities (German/USA) If you were born in Germany and you have a parent who is German and the other is American, you are allowed to maintain both nationalities up to 21 years old. after that period, you'll have to choose one.

You are already a dual US/German citizen. No application required. A passport is different. You do need to apply for a German passport. And if you want a certificate of German citizenship, you would need to apply for that too. Visit the web site of the German embassy closest to where you live.
