Italian Dual Citizenship?

  • My mom came to America in the mid 70's but i'm not sure when she became a US citizen. Did she have to renounce her italian citizenship to become an American or is it considered a legal dual citizenship? and...If so, am i eligible for it? I was born in 1988.

  • Answer:

You might be eligible for it. Your first step should be to call the Italian embassy, explain your situation and ask. They can find out if your mom is still a citizen and tell you if you qualify for citizenship.

If your mother truly had dual citizenship when you were born, then yes you are Italian by birth. Italian mothers have been able to pass on Italian citizenship to their children since 1948. However, you should examine if that is truly the case that she was a dual citizen: Italian citizens who naturalized into US citizenship before August 15, 1992 were considered to have LOST their Italian citizenship by the Italian government. If your mother has a way to prove that she was still Italian when she gave birth to you, then you will be good to go.

The USA's law doesn't forbit double citizenship. Some Americans have double citizenship automatically. For example, if someone was born abroad in the family of the USA citizens. Or in the USA in family of other state. So, the question: where were you born? And what citizenship your mom had when she gave your birth....
